“As Selwyn’s local MP I am immensely grateful for the contribution that our volunteers make by freely donating their time and energy to support a range of non-profit institutions including youth organisations, social services, sports clubs and charities.

“We are fortunate to have many wonderful voluntary organisations here in Selwyn including our local volunteer fire brigades who work tirelessly in difficult situations to respond to fires and road accidents,” Ms Adams said.

Ms Adams noted that she would be working to ensure the importance of volunteers in our fire services was at the centre of a review of the fire service which was currently underway.

National Volunteer Week 2015 runs from 21 – 27 June and is themed, ‘there is a place for you to volunteer’. The Government supports volunteers by providing $12.5 million through the Community Organisation Grants scheme, $1.5 million for community-led development, and $502,000 through the Support for Volunteering Fund available every year.
