Snow is now falling in Canterbury, with Ashburton seeing its first sprinkling at about 2.30pm. Tinwald Tavern duty manager Andy Garlick said the snow was not settling as the ground was wet from rainfall.
“The snow is swirling around,” he said.
Garlick said one patron had driven through Mayfield in Canterbury this afternoon where snow was “thick on the ground.”
Twizel residents reprorted twenty centimetres of snow on the road and schools in Methven closed early after snow blanketed the town from 1pm. By 2pm the main road was covered in about 2cm and snow was falling steadily.
Senior Constable Les Andrews, of Twizel, said it was carnage on the roads because of the cold snap. “I have just passed three cars that are stuck on the road.”
Trucks were blocking other motorists from using the Lindis Pass he said, and the stretch of road between Fairlie and Twizel was closed off.
